Fight or Flight

Whenever Gil comes in the house after work and I don't hear him, I jump a mile. He mocks me every time. Now I know why! After school today, all the teachers were listening to a presentation in a classroom and we started hearing "pop, pop, pop" outside the window. I guarantee you've never seen a group of people hit the floor so fast! After the shooting on the front yard last year and throat slashing behind the school this year, we're all a bit edgy. Understandably. It definitely got my heart pumping today as I lay on the floor waiting for a bullet to fly through the window. No wonder I'm always preparing myself for the worst!

...By the way, it ended up being hooligans with fire crackers (and yes, I just used the word "hooligans"). And for the record, the College of Ed at GVSU was great, but it did NOT prepare me for this!

So Much Better

Gil was busy in the yard all weekend. It pays to marry someone who worked on a golf course in his teenaged years. He's great with the lawn! I'm super excited about the hydrangea and azaleas that Gil planted next to the driveway. So much better than the ugly shrubs that were there before.

It will look so pretty once they get bigger and start flowering a lot. Definite improvement from what was there already. Gil also got a composter at Lowes. Now I feel like Rachael Ray when I'm cooking because I have a "GB" on the counter. Which, by the way, you can actually purchase on amazon. I'm using a big tupperware bowl that I bought for $2 at Meijer. Better deal. ;)

A Weekend Around the House

After a week of rain and clouds, it's so nice to have awesome weather this weekend. Yesterday Gil & I got tons of yard work done, which we had been putting off for a while.
Gil dug up all the weeds and vines that had been covering this area. We are going to take out those ugly bushes and plant something less atrocious.

We missed the Wine Stroll downtown because we were getting things done around the house. When we were done, we got lunch on Main Street yesterday and saw all the strollers. I will definitely be doing that next year. It looked super fun and would've gotten us out to some of the restaurants we haven't tried yet.
This lovely flower is currently blooming in our yard.
Here's a closer look at the weird thing our porch did over the winter. We still need to get that fixed.

I think I'm going to head to Home Goods later today (love that store!) but before I do, I have to finish lesson plans for the week. We only have 20-something days left of school. That is simultaneously awesome and terrifying, as we still have a lot of math we need to fit in before the school year is over. I am ridiculously excited about this summer though, since I'm not teaching summer school. I start class in July. That's my only obligation though! Plus I have another niece coming in July and we're potentially getting a puppy when I get out of school. Can't wait for the break!!!

A Few New Things...

I'm having one of those days where I just love our house. There may not be enough closet space, our front porch planks are popping up, but I love it. The size is perfect for us right now and I'm still in love with it's charm.

We haven't done very much around here lately because life has been busy. I haven't touch the study...it's still a mess. But I will be tackling that this summer for sure. Today we bought cute pillows for the front porch swings from Lowes and as you'll see, my beloved Pottery Barn wall art has finally made it up onto the wall!
Can you see how the wood is buckling under the swing? It's the strangest thing. Don't you love our new pillows, though? So cute, to match our red front door.
Meanwhile, I'm loving this stormy weather that we're having. It's pouring rain right now. Hopefully I will have other cute house things to post soon!
